In English, “batizado” is translated as “baptism.” A Capoeira batizado is an event that traditionally takes place once a year. During this celebration, new students are welcomed into the Capoeira community by receiving their first cord. Before it is given, however, each student must play a game with a mestre to demonstrate their understanding of the basic movements. More advanced students are able to receive a higher cord at the event as well.
The batizado is also a time for Capoeira mestres and instructors to come together and share their vast knowledge with students. The batizado ceremony is proceeded by a weekend full of workshops and lectures offered by the visiting mestres to which students from other Capoeira groups are also invited. Batizados are excellent opportunities for students of different groups to connect, exchange knowledge, and build new friendships.
